    Research funding for the energy turnaround increasing

    Energy research contributes towards the development of the processes and technologies necessary for achieving the goals of the energy turnaround. The German government has been continuously increasing funding for energy research since 2006. In 2013 alone, it spent 100 million euros more on this than in the prior year. This reinforced above all the research areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. It provided just under 300 million euros for each of these subjects.  more...

    Database shows output from renewables

    The sources of renewable energy –sun, wind, water and biomass – account for a large share of the electricity production in Germany. At the beginning of July 2014, solar energy covered the entire peak load. This is shown in the new online “Energy Charts” database at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.  more...

    Swift construction of pipelines

    The laying of pipes, for example for heating networks, has previously been a labour intensive and time consuming occupation. With the newly developed “Pipe Express” method, a special tunnel boring machine drills through the ground at speeds of up to 1.2 metres per minute and conveys the soil directly to the surface instead of displacing it sideways. At the same time, the steel or concrete pipe is inserted into the horizontal borehole. In comparison with the open cut method, the process requires less than a fifth of the normal trench width and can also be used without lowering the groundwater level.  more...
     

    Heat pipes de-ice railway points

    Geothermal heating ensures that railway points also remain working when there is ice and snow. Once installed, they work independently using only geothermal energy and without any additional energy being supplied.     Sustainable use of deep geothermal energy

    The alpine foreland is experiencing a geothermal energy boom. The region boasts a vast quantity of deep geothermal water. In the Greater Munich area alone, 15 geothermal heat stations and power plants are currently either in operation or under construction. Geoscientists led by the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics (LIAG) have studied the geological and hydraulic conditions of the region and developed a simulation model. This model can now be used to better predict the interplay between power plants, long-term operation and exploration risks of new plans.  more...
     

    Thermal heat from pit water

    The coal mining company RAG annually pumps over 100 million cubic metres of water to the surface from a depth of up to 1,000 m to secure the stability of the ground and the safety of drinking water in former mining regions. For one year now, the municipal utility of Bochum has been heating several public buildings with that pit water. The pilot project demonstrates how to use old mines for an eco-friendly heat supply of surrounding buildings.  more...

    Metro tunnels enable geothermal air-conditioning

    When constructing new underground metro lines it is possible to integrate geothermal plants with few additional costs. That provides an excellent opportunity to use this renewable energy source in cities with densely built underground infrastructures. A test plant is in operation on Metro Line 6 at Stuttgart’s Fasanenhof underground station. Scientists at the University of Stuttgart are investigating the effects that the geothermal activation of the tunnel is having on the subsurface.  more...

    The supermarket of the future saves energy

    The energy savings division at the discount store Aldi Süd in Rastatt should in the future only need two-thirds of the primary energy usually required for refrigeration, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting. A compressor pack with carbon dioxide as a coolant which has been developed in-house, and which is coupled to borehole heat exchangers, not only cools food, but also provides temperature control for indoor areas.  In the third year of operation, the amount of energy consumed is coming close to the ambitious target levels.  more...
     

    Ismaning banking on geothermal energy

    The Bavarian municipality of Ismaning is generating increasingly more electricity and heat from local energy sources. During the next few days, pump and injection tests will begin on the new geothermal plant that will continue for several months. At a depth of around 2000 metres, the two wells are extracting more hot water than was originally assumed. The trial operation of the geothermal heat supply can therefore begin.  more...
