Energy transition in transport

Until now, the energy and transport sectors were considered separately from one another in the energy balance. The “Energy transition in transport” funding initiative by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is entering into force to change that. It is intended to help bring the energy and transport sectors closer together and advance the technological possibilities in a cross-system approach encompassing a wide range of vehicles.

A holistic view of the energy sector and transport is necessary to tackle the energy transition and climate protection successfully. This has not been the case to date, which is why BMWi passed the funding announcement: “Energy transition in transport: linking sectors by using electricity-based fuels”. This announcement is to dovetail the energy sector and transport more closely and advance the technological possibilities in a cross-system approach. In doing so, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs emphasises the energy policy relevance of the rising levels of traffic on land and water, and facilitates synergy effects via joint research and development. To achieve these goals, BMWi is making roughly 130 million euros available for the next three years.

State Secretary Uwe Beckmeyer: “In the new funding initiative, we are focusing specifically on linking innovative energy and maritime technologies, to drive the energy transition in the transport sector forward. At the same time, using low-CO2 and low pollutant combustion engines creates new opportunities for the German industry.”

The funding announcement focuses on projects for production and use of alternative, electricity-based fuels and integrating the new technologies in the energy sector. The electricity-based fuels can be used in passenger cars, heavy goods vehicles, ships, construction machinery or stationary industrial engines. Starting with this central idea, BMWi will also fund research concepts for maritime systems with synthetic fuels and smart micro-grids in harbour areas (EnEFF: Hafen2020) and development of new technologies.

Cross-sector approach

The initiative builds on three BMWi funding announcements:

  • Application-oriented research and development for non-nuclear energy research in the German Federal Government’s 6th Energy Research Programme (December 2014),
  • Increasing vehicle drive system efficiency – Funding initiative for environmentally friendly and efficient drive technology on road and rail (November 2013; currently implemented as part of the “New vehicle and system technologies” specialist programme) and
  • Next-generation maritime technologies (March 2016).

Project Management Jülich (PtJ) and Project Management TÜV Rheinland (PT TÜV) supervise the research projects and coordinate the programmes.
