    Web portal for energy-optimised buildings and districts

    The website of the ENERGIEWENDEBAUEN research initiative is now online. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is bundling its long-standing subsidy measures entitled Energy Optimized Building, Energy-Efficient City and Energy-Efficient Heating and Cooling Networks, and also research on thermal energy storage and low-temperature solar thermal energy systems in the redesigned research initiative.     Air-conditioning buildings with salt hydrates

    In many office buildings, it is just as important to supply cooling in summer as heating in winter. Researchers have therefore developed salt hydrates that are suitable as storage material in chilled ceilings and centralised cold storage systems. The special advantage: Through a phase change, they store cooling energy with a high energy density and at the temperature level needed for air conditioning.     "We have to increase our efforts!"

    The first ENERGIEWENDEBAUEN conference took place in Berlin from 30 - 31 January, 2017. Some 350 participants from research, academia, architecture and planning offices, politics, energy suppliers, cities and municipalities as well as the real estate industry discussed how the energy supply of buildings and districts could be made future-proof. The aim of the German federal government is to create a climate-neutral building stock by 2050. This will not be easy to achieve.  more...

    Refurbishment roadmaps for districts

    So far, the rate of refurbishment of the building stock has been around one per cent. How could the annual refurbishment rate be increased significantly – to about three per cent? Together with municipalities, researchers are looking into obstacles while developing refurbishment plans for differently structured model districts.     Assessing solar houses in energy and economic terms

    With the German Energy Savings Ordinance 2016, the maximum value allowed for the annual primary energy requirement for new residential buildings has been reduced by a quarter. This is not a problem in solar houses: they require a maximum of 15 kWh/(m2p.a.) of primary energy for heating energy and auxiliary power and are therefore well below the requirements of passive houses.     Storing heat until winter

    To be able to use summer heat for heating during the winter, hot water storage systems have to be very large. Small storage systems cool down too quickly. With this in mind, seasonal storage tanks have been developed almost exclusively for housing estates or very large consumers.     The building serves as a heat storage tank

    Buildings with high solar shares of fraction require large water tanks to store heat. Researchers have developed a space-saving alternative: excess heat is stored in the ceilings of the building via building element activation.     Energy-plus concept tested on housing estate

    A housing estate was built on an industrial waste ground with over 180 residential units built to energy-plus standards. But how much does it cost to operate this low-energy building type in an energy efficient way? And how much influence do the residents have over energy consumption? To find out, researchers from the Munich University of Applied Sciences and the Dresden Technical University monitored the area by taking measurements, and optimised the technology in operation.     Heating buildings via their exterior walls

    Surface heating systems facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources and reduce energy costs. However, since the retrofitting of underfloor heating is very expensive, thermally activated walls provide an option in existing buildings.     Minimally invasive refurbishment with a system

    In Frankfurt, two four-storey residential buildings are currently being refurbished. Two minimally invasive renovation concepts are being tested that are based on multifunctional window modules and insulation elements.
