Sandstrasse Primary School in Gelsenkirchen

After a pilot phase, in which up to 8 % heating energy and 12 % electricity consumption were saved on average, a total of 24 schools in Gelsenkirchen have been participating in the project “Lessons in Climate Protection “ since August 1999. This project is coordinated by the municipal environment office which organizes e.g. regular energy meetings as a discussion group for the schools involved.

One of the eleven participating primary schools is the Sandstrasse Catholic primary school, where the starting conditions were good due to a prior refurbishment of the building. The schoolchildren eagerly learnt about proper airing, kept outer doors shut and became aware of economical lighting. One of the central persons was the caretaker, who explained the heating system to the children, read energy consumption meters with them and performed simple experiments on temperature  measurement.

Bottrop-Welheim Secondary School

At the Bottrop-Welheim secondary school, the energy saving project is mainly carried out by the group opting for the special subject of energy in their eighth school year. On the one hand, priority is given to sustainably lowering the school’s energy consumption by motivating classmates and teachers. On the other hand, the schoolchildren in this group will receive a certificate at the end of the school year testifying to their special know-how in the field of energy. The prerequisite is regular attendance and the passing of a final examination. These certificates could be of advantage in the search for a suitable apprenticeship after leaving school.

Harksheide Grammar School in Norderstedt

Harksheide grammar school has been concerned with the topic of “energy saving” since 1996 as part of an overall ecological  concept. At the beginning, priority was given to the cross-disciplinary teaching of a senior class in the subjects of physics, geography, politics and history (detailed information about concept definition and content at members.aol.com/beenetcl/harks98.htm). An important instrument for practical application was the establishment of an advertising agency, UKW, at the school within the framework of a project week, which developed a logo, posters and comics on the topic. In the meantime, the energy working group chiefly involves younger classes who are more willing to commit themselves. Since 1998, this working group has participated in the Fifty/Fifty Project in Norderstedt and, up to the present, has received € 4,600 from the town as a reward for saved energy costs.
