I. Collection and utilisation of personal data

FIZ Karlsruhe only asks for very specific types of personal data and only uses this data for specific purposes.

1. Log files and cookies

When you visit our website, it is standard practice that the web server saves the IP address you have been assigned by your service provider, the website you are visiting, the website from which you are visiting as well as the date and length of your visit. In no case do we identify users and determine their individual user behaviour.

We use log files with the users’ IP addresses for the following purposes only:

a) to gather statistical information about overall use,
b) to analyse the general use of our websites,
c) to be able to reconstruct the dialogues of our customers in the event of faults

We do not use the users’ IP addresses beyond the extent described in items a) to c).
The FIZ Karlsruhe website uses Piwik, an open source software that also employs cookies for statistical analysis of the visits. The information regarding your use of this website, which has been generated with the help of the cookies, is stored on FIZ Karlsruhe’s own servers in Germany. The IP address is made anonymous immediately after processing and before storage. You can prevent the installation of cookies via a respective setting in your browser software.

2. Personal data

When visiting our website www.bine.info, you will only be asked to provide personal data if you

  • send us a message using the contact form
  • place an order for free publications
  • register free of charge as a BINE subscriber or purchase products available at a charge in our shop

In these cases we require your name, e-mail address, address and, if applicable, the products you wish to receive. We shall request additional personal information if you register in order to subscribe to our services and publications – i.e. your subject and language preferences as well as indication of the professional context in which the information will be used.

The provision of personal data is voluntary and the data will only be used for the precise purpose for which you have given us this data. By entering your personal data, you are consenting to the processing and use by us of your personal data to process and implement the information services you have selected and for the other purposes specified below.

Data regarding your person or the information you wish to receive will only be used for the precise purpose for which you have given us this data. This includes the forwarding of your data – to the extent necessary – to FIZ Karlsruhe GmbH’s sales and contractual partners so that ordered services and technical support can be provided. In all other cases, your data will not be forwarded or sold to third parties for their marketing or other commercial purposes without your consent. As a subscriber to our e-mail services or subscriptions, you can cancel the registration at any time.

3. Social media widget

We welcome our readers recommending and discussing contents of our website www.bine.info on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social media sites. To this end, the operators of these platforms have provided corresponding buttons as part of the c't "Shariff" project.

Shariff enables you to use social media without unnecessarily compromising your privacy. The c't "Shariff" project replaces the usual social network share buttons and protects your surfing behaviour from prying eyes. A single click of the button will nevertheless enable you to share information with others. You do not have to do anything else – the webmaster looks after the rest.

The usual social media buttons transmit the user data for every page viewed to Facebook & Co. and give the social networks precise information about your surfing habits (user tracking). For this to happen you neither have to be logged on nor a member of the network. In contrast, a Shariff button only establishes direct contact between the social network and the visitor if the latter actively clicks the Share button.

"Shariff" therefore prevents you from leaving a digital trace on every page visited and improves the data protection. You can then post a like, Google +1 or tweet as you like – the social network will not receive any more information.

Thanks to "Shariff", the "likes" are displayed by the operator of the page with the buttons. Because "Shariff" is integrated by the webmaster, you do not have to do anything else as a visitor.

4. Links to third-party websites

Please note that other service providers’ websites that you can access here may ask you for personal data. This data protection statement does not apply to the websites of other service providers. We have structured the accessing of third-party websites in such a way that it is recognisable as such (indication of external link, opening of a new window with the URL address of the other provider).

5. Revocation

You are entitled to revoke this consent (cp. paragraph 2) at any time for future use. Please note that upon your revocation, FIZ Karlsruhe will no longer be in a position to provide the services listed under 2. a) to c). Should you have signed up for the free BINE subscription, you can configure the registration in your settings at any time or delete the subscription including all stored data.

On top of this, FIZ Karlsruhe ensures that the data relating to individual accessed pages on the website (user data) are made anonymous directly after your visit and will be used exclusively for purposes of statistical analysis by the above-mentioned Piwik software tool. The user data will be deleted immediately thereafter.

II. Forwarding of personal data

Your data will not be forwarded to third parties for their marketing or other commercial purposes (e.g. selling) without your consent. Please note that other service providers’ websites that you can access here may ask you for personal data. This data protection statement does not apply to the websites of other service providers. It is in your own interest that you should act in a careful and responsible manner when online, and that you ensure that your password and other items of customer information cannot be accessed by unauthorised third parties.

Personal data are not passed on to state institutions or authorities unless this is absolutely necessary to ward off threats to national security or public safety or to prosecute crimes.

Beyond this, FIZ Karlsruhe reserves the right to use your data to assert or defend itself against legal claims.

III. Data protection

Security measures protect FIZ Karlsruhe’s websites against loss, misuse and unauthorised modifications. In addition, we make every effort to protect your personal data as best as possible in accordance with the provisions of the relevant data protection laws. However, FIZ Karlsruhe cannot guarantee the security of the data you provide to us under all circumstances. Data transfer is carried out at your risk.

IV. Right to information

Upon request, FIZ Karlsruhe will notify you in writing or if preferred in electronic form whether and, if applicable, which of your personal data are stored on our server.
