Solar modules on course to be recycled

Following personnel changes in PV CYCLE, the industry association for recycling photovoltaic modules (BINE reported), Wilfried Taetow took over its leadership in September 2011. In the BINE interview, the new president explains how the recycling of PV modules can be realised at a time when the industry is under economic pressure and the EU is planning to include discarded PV modules within the scope of its EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.  more...

New operating system for stand-alone grids

Even in a remote village far from the public electricity grid there is modern everyday life with radios, washing machines and electrical appliances. In energy terms this is a ?standalone? system. The electricity is supplied by a hybrid system that combines various renewable energy sources and an additional diesel generator, and is buffered with a battery system. An information and control network with a new operating system keeps the stand-alone grid (mini-grid) stable.  more...

Redox flow battery for renewable energy park

The Faculty of Supply Engineering at Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences has installed a renewable energy park at its Wolfenbüttel campus. A redox flow battery weighing 5,000 kg has now been added to this energy park. With this system, which is only the second of its kind in Germany, a further storage technology is now available in this "Smart Grid Test Facility".  more...

Annual gathering of power plant technicians

"Within the next ten years, the number of load changes in large-scale power plants will double." In his opening speech, Professor Michael Beckmann outlined a central task for power plant technology, namely to flexibly ensure grid stability without overly reducing the service life of turbo engines. Each year, his Institute for Energy Technology at the Technical University of Dresden organises a conference at which hundreds of experts discuss a wide range of issues spanning from solar power plants to nuclear technology.  more...

New electronic meters measure and manage consumption

    Interactive electricity grids

The meter reader never rings the doorbell anymore. The Smart Meter sends the consumption data to the office by e-mail in real time. This intelligent meter is the starting point for the interactive network. The new standardised devices can do far more than calculate consumption totals. They act as control and information nodes. They allow the latest consumption data to be used to control machinery and electricity generation systems according to the supply of electricity and the grid load. They are essential if variable tariffs are to be used.  more...

    Aachen aims to reinvent electromobility

Researchers from Aachen, Germany are developing a new type of electric vehicle, the StreetScooter, which is as affordable as it is environmentally-friendly. In close cooperation with 20 medium-sized industrial companies and 15 research institutions, a concept was developed comprising innovative production methods and new battery management and financing systems. The electric vehicle made in Aachen should cost around 5,000 Euros when series production begins after a short production run of 2,000 units.  more...

Energy-plus building supplies cars with electricity

    Living in a power plant

Buildings of the future are secret power plants: they will generate more energy than they require. The surplus can be used for the residents? electromobility or is fed into the grid. This idea is now to be implemented as an energy-plus building with electromobility. The fully recyclable house designed by scientists from Dresden, Germany offers 142 m² of floor space and produces more energy than is required for a 4-person household and to run two electric cars and an electric scooter (with an annual mileage of 29,000 km). The team of researchers from Dresden University of Technology won second prize at the planning competition of the Zukunft Bau (Future of Construction) research initiative with this pilot project in February 2011.  more...

New report publicises European-wide facts and figures

Renewable energies cope with economic crisis

In 2009, renewable energies met 11.6% of the gross final energy consumption of the European Union, whereby they generated 18.2% of the electrical energy supplies. Their economic importance is also growing: more than 900,000 workers in the various sectors generate a turnover of 120 billion euros. These are the results of the tenth report published by the EurObserv'ER consortium on "The State of Renewable Energies in Europe". The annually published report describes not just the development of the various technologies, broken down according to the respective EU countries, but also explains their socio-economic importance. The documentation, which is published in English and French, can now be downloaded free of charge.  more...

Search machines are no replacement for specialist databases

    Researching facts for energy research

The Internet offers rapid and convenient access to information ? including for energy research. However, when it comes to obtaining reliable, complete and quotable information for research purposes, there is no real alternative to using specialist databases. This is the conclusion of scientists from the ETDE (Energy Technology Data Exchange). In a study they compared the search results provided by their ETDEWEB database with those from Google and Google Scholar, whereby they used search terms from different areas concerned with energy transformation and utilisation. The main thematic focus was on renewable energies, but energy efficient technologies such as recycling waste heat or utilising daylight in office buildings were also looked at.  more...

Multi-functional inverters and storage equipment for solar power

Photovoltaic power can be used even when the sun is not shining with the help of a battery system that provides intermediate storage. The result is that electricity not consumed during the day can be used to light the house in the evening. Alternatively, an energy company can draw on this power when demand is high. For owners of photovoltaic systems, the option of consuming the power they generate themselves has become more attractive since the remuneration for self-generated solar power was revised as of 1 July 2010.  more...
